Course duration 24 weeks

This course is designed for those who require consolidation of advanced level English speaking and listening, reading, writing, literacy skills including digital literacy skills, and study skills in English prior to accessing a range of further study pathways including higher education. Participants include those who have already completed or partially completed further or higher education, those who wish to upgrade their qualifications and those wishing to enter higher level qualifications for the first time. The purpose of this course is to develop communication and research skills and knowledge at a complex level together with knowledge of the Australian education system. Outcomes are designed to support those who will use their existing skills and knowledge in their language in the workplace, for example as interpreters and providing bilingual support, to gain access to further training to support employment.

Entry Requirements

The recommended English language outcome level for Certificate IV in EAL (Further Studies) is

  • IELTS score of 5 – 5.5, or
  • Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) score of 3

  • IELTS score of 5.5 – 6.5,or
  • Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) score of 4 – 5

Access to the course is not limited on the basis gender, social or educational background. All students must of the age of 18 years or over at the time of applying for admission at College.

The courses contained in the EAL Framework may be aligned to ISLPR levels as a guide to placement in courses. Successful completion of this course will equip students with written and spoken English skills and knowledge to gain entry into other courses offered within the AQF.
